Obituary: David Lee Shafer

David Lee Shafer, 69, of Waterloo, passed away on April 26 at MercyOne Hospital.  David was born October 10, 1956, in Waterloo, the son of Robert and Mary Jane  (Heisler) Shafer.  

David graduated from West High School in 1977. He worked at Hardee’s at the UNI Student Union for 30 years until retiring. He loved cooking, baking cakes for birthdays, and making desserts for holidays. He also enjoyed doing household chores. David helped prepare and serve Wednesday night youth meal at Westminster Presbyterian Church. David loved  listening to music and going to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony and both Waterloo and  Cedar Falls Municipal Band concerts. He also enjoyed dining out, especially at Culvers.  

David is survived by: his mother, Mary Jane Shafer of Waterloo; two brothers, Bill Shafer  of Dallas, Texas and Tom Shafer of Holland, Iowa; his niece, Kaylee Shafer of North English,  Iowa; his aunt, Shirley Bassett of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and two uncles, Don Heisler of Newton,  Iowa and Larry Heisler of Waukee, Iowa.  

Preceded in death by: his father, Robert Shafer; his paternal grandparents, George and Marie Shafer; his maternal grandparents, Harry and Agness Heisler; and his aunt, Betty (Heisler) Neal.  

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 2 at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway in Waterloo with burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo.
