HS Girls Track: Pirates shine in first indoor meet

Hudson’s Ella Annis runs in the 4x800-meter relay at the Wartburg High School Invitational. 

The Hudson girls track and field team opened the season with a strong showing at the Wartburg High  School Invitational on Monday, March 9, at Wartburg College. 

The Pirates placed fifth out of 22 teams, scoring 32 points. Hudson athletes recorded six top-eight finishes  in 13 events. 

“I was extremely proud of our performance and effort,” said coach Jamal Currica. 

Leading the way was Mollie Hansen, who won the 800-meter run in 2:25.62 and placed second in the  1,500-meter run in 5:04.28. 

Cailin Stickfort had a strong meet, placing fourth in the 55-meter dash prelims with a personal-best 7.70,  qualifying for the finals. She placed fourth again in the finals (7.78) and added another personal record in the long  jump, finishing 14th with a mark of 14-9. 

Ella Steele placed fourth in the 800-meter run (2:35.68). 

Hudson’s 4x800 relay team of Elle Gunnarson, Ella Annis, Jordyn Rhoades and Reagan Lewis placed sixth  (11:06.08). 

The 4x400 relay team of Rebecca Vidal, Teagan Honermann, Gunnarson and Steele placed eighth  (4:30.63). 

Additional personal records were set by Josie Messmore, who placed 16th in the long jump (14-1¾),  Meleah Wolfe, who finished 32nd in the 55-meter hurdles (10.56), and Brooklynne Michael, who placed 44th in the  200-meter dash (34.06). 

Hansen, Steele and Vidal qualified to compete in the IATC Indoor Championships at Iowa State University  on Friday, March 13. 

Hudson will return to Wartburg for its final indoor meet of the season on Tuesday, March 24.
