Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office Warns of Scam

The Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office has received numerous reports from citizens getting phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Sheriff's Office. The imposter is informing people they are calling on behalf of an inmate in the jail who is known by the person receiving the call. The imposter  then asks the individual to send or transfer money via an app to post the inmate's bond. The Black Hawk  County Sheriff's Office will not ask you to pay a fine or bond in this manner, nor will we ask for any  personal information over the phone.

"It would be rare that a member of the Sheriff's Office would call anyone to post bond on behalf of an inmate. If the call doesn't come directly from the inmate, you should automatically be suspicious.  If you are posting a bond, we only accept cash at the jail; otherwise, you would have to post it through  the Clerk of Court or a legitimate bonding company. If you're asked to post a bond via any other means,  it's most likely a scam," said Sheriff Nate Neff.

If you have any questions about the validity of a call from someone claiming to be with the Sheriff's Office, please end the call, then call us back at 319-291-2587. We won't be offended; we'd much rather see you protect yourself than see you get taken advantage of!" said Sheriff Neff
