Volleyball: Pirates Battle Falcons, Regals
By Siri Olsen
The Hudson Pirates volleyball team battled through two competitive matches last week, taking on the Aplington-Parkersburg Falcons on Tuesday, Sept. 22, before facing the Iowa City Regina Regals two days later.
Hudson opened the week against Aplington-Parkersburg in a four-set battle. The Falcons took control early, winning the opening set 25-19. The Pirates responded in the second, evening the match with a 25-17 victory.
With the match tied at one set apiece, Aplington-Parkersburg regained the advantage in the third, defeating Hudson 25-17. The Pirates kept things close in the fourth, but the Falcons held on for a 25-22 win to take the match 3-1.
Two days later, the Pirates returned to the court to take on Iowa City Regina. The opening set was a back-and-forth battle, with the Regals eventually pulling out a 28-26 victory. Regina carried that momentum into the second set, winning 25-18 to take a 2-0 match lead.
Hudson answered in the third. The Pirates came out strong and earned a decisive 25-13 victory to cut Regina’s lead to 2-1.
The fourth set brought another close battle. Hudson stayed within striking distance, but Regina held on for a 25-23 victory to take the match 3-1.
Although Hudson came away from the week without a match victory, the Pirates battled back after falling behind in both contests, taking a set from each opponent and keeping the fourth sets close.
The Pirates will return to action Oct. 6 and 8 for the conference tournament. Host sites and match times are still to be determined.
