Triple Overtime, Big Wins: Pirates Off to an Exciting Start

The Hudson girls basketball team opened its season Tuesday, Nov. 25, with an exciting triple-overtime thriller against the Dunkerton Raiders. The game was intense, and the atmosphere was electric. The Pirates shot 34.8% from the 3-point line, with juniors Taylor Davis and Siri Olsen leading the scoring with 20 and 18 points, respectively. Freshman Paige Davis grabbed 15 rebounds, and junior Macey O’Brien dished out six assists. Although the Pirates fell in the third overtime, 73-69, they were proud to start the season with a strong showing.
The Pirates traveled to Dike on Tuesday, Dec. 2, to open conference play against the Dike-New Hartford Wolverines. The game remained close through three quarters as both teams displayed tough defense and solid offense. In the fourth quarter, senior Mollie Hansen stepped up with sharp shooting and a strong defensive presence. Hansen led the team with 17 points and six steals, helping the Pirates pull away and secure a 56-38 win.
Hudson then faced the No. 5-ranked team in Class 1A, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Rebels, at home on Friday, Dec. 5. The Pirates came out strong and led for most of the game, showcasing their defense with 11 steals on the night. In a heartbreaking finish, the Rebels scored a fast-break layup in the final seconds to take a 53-52 win.
The Pirates rebounded with another thriller on Friday, Dec. 12, taking on a well-rounded Jesup J-Hawk team. Hudson led 26-19 at halftime, but Jesup battled back in the second half to tie the game 40-40 at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Pirates found momentum early and held on for a 47-43 victory. Junior Taylor Davis led the scoring with 14 points, and Davis, Olsen, and Gia Baldviezo each contributed four assists.
The Pirates are back in action tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 19 for another conference matchup against the Waterloo Columbus Sailors in Waterloo.
