Public Safety Reminder Issued Amid Local Confusion Over Unmarked Government Vehicles

Recent social media posts and community discussions in the Waterloo and Black Hawk County area have raised questions about unmarked government vehicles and which agencies may use them. 

Public safety officials note that unmarked or low-profile vehicles are used by a wide range of federal, state and local government agencies — not just immigration enforcement. 

Officials have also addressed online images and reports in recent weeks, noting that some circulating claims did not reflect confirmed law enforcement activity at the times alleged.  Residents are reminded that social media posts do not always reflect verified information. 

Many government entities, including transportation, regulatory, investigative and public safety agencies, may operate unmarked or minimally marked vehicles as part of their work. 

Officials emphasize that attempting to follow, confront or interfere with any suspected government vehicle can create serious safety risks for everyone involved. 

Residents are encouraged to: 

• Avoid confronting or pursuing vehicles believed to be government-related
• Contact local law enforcement if they believe suspicious or unsafe activity is occurring
• Allow trained professionals to handle potential enforcement or investigation situations
