Pirates Rally in Overtime to Upset Aplington-Parkersburg, Cruise Past Columbus  Catholic

The Hudson girls basketball team opened their week on Tuesday, Dec. 16, with an  overtime upset over Class 2A No. 15-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg.  

The game got off to a slow start for the Pirates, who trailed 22-16 at halftime and 33-22  heading into the fourth quarter. But Hudson stormed back with tough defense and  sharp shooting, holding the Falcons to just 7 points in the final frame while scoring 18  of their own to tie the game 40-40 and force overtime, yet another extra-period thriller  for the Pirates this season.  

In overtime, Hudson sealed the deal with a 52-48 victory, improving to 3-2 overall and  2-0 in NICL conference play. Junior Taylor Davis led all scorers with 21 points. Juniors  Macey O’Brien and Siri Olsen added 13 points each, and the Pirates totaled 19 steals  with their intense defense.  

Hudson followed up with a dominant conference road win on Friday, Dec. 19, defeating  Waterloo Columbus Catholic 66-28.  

The Pirates jumped out to a 10-0 lead within the first three minutes and never looked  back, controlling the game from start to finish. O’Brien led the scoring with 21 points,  senior Mollie Hansen recorded three steals, and freshman Paige Davis grabbed four  rebounds as Hudson improved to 4-2 on the season.  

The Pirates will return to action after Christmas break with a tough home matchup  against No. 2-ranked Denver on Tuesday, Jan. 6. Junior varsity tips off at 4:30 p.m.  with varsity to follow at 6:15 p.m.
