Pirate Wrestling Reloads with Depth, Leadership, and Tradition
By Coach Wayne Haskovec
The Hudson Pirate wrestling program enters the season coming off a 20-8 dual record and securing its 10th consecutive winning season. In addition, the Pirates begin the 2025-26 campaign with 17 straight years of qualifying at least one wrestler for the state tournament. Expectations remain high—and thankfully, we have an excellent group of young men excited to build on that tradition.
We take a great deal of pride in developing and recruiting kids who have never had the opportunity to wrestle. This year, we have a roster of 26, which includes a few young men who have never stepped onto a mat. We spend considerable time pairing our rookies with veterans during practice. Our older wrestlers do a fantastic job helping our newer athletes as they drill and work through situations.
As a team that opens its doors to all levels and abilities, there must be a balance that creates an environment for success across the board. I believe this is one of the most enduring aspects of our current program. The Pirates dropped a closely contested dual to Dike-New Hartford/Gladbrook-Reinbeck (DNH-GR) before winning the nightcap against Oelwein, 66-6. We were without one of our lower and upper weight wrestlers for the opening meet, but we’re hopeful to shift our lineup soon and get some of our younger athletes cleared for action.
Undefeated on the night were Alston Loeb, Carter Ites, Mason Fogt, and Blake Taylor. Also earning wins: Camdyn Budde, Aadyn Myhr, Abe Elliott, Rylan Fogt, Charlie Buskohl, Brady Greiman, and Gavin Fish. A note for context: several schools in the NICL are combined programs—such as DNH-GR (Dike-New Hartford and Gladbrook-Reinbeck), BCLUW-South Hardin (BCLUW-SH), East Marshall/GMG/Meskwaki, and Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center (AP-GC). These co-ops make a significant difference in roster sizes. Hudson is one of only five stand-alone Class 1A programs in the conference. Unlike other sports, NICL wrestling is not split into pods—each team competes against every conference opponent in duals and again at the conference tournament.
Chris Davis Invitational
The Pirates got back to work Friday to prepare for the Chris Davis Invitational, which featured a deep 16- team field that challenged both varsity and JV squads. The tournament served as an early measuring stick and showcased Hudson’s depth across multiple weights.
Senior Mason Fogt delivered a standout performance, earning his 100th career win and an undefeated championship run at 126 pounds. His consistency and leadership set the tone. Alston Loeb and Blake Taylor both battled to finals appearances in their respective weights, while Carter Ites placed third at 215.
Beyond the placers, several Pirates gained valuable experience against tough competition—a key part of our season-long development.
Home Dual Success
Despite some tough winter conditions, the Pirates hosted their first home duals of the season. Returning state qualifiers Fogt and Loeb remained undefeated, while Taylor continued his strong start with multiple falls. Hudson’s depth was on display, closing the night with six straight pins against Sumner-Fredericksburg—a powerful way to finish the event.
JV Action and Growth
With the varsity dual tournament at Colfax-Mingo canceled due to weather, the focus shifted to the JV squad. The Union JV Tournament provided meaningful mat time with teams like Davenport Assumption, East and West Waterloo, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Western Dubuque, Cedar Falls, and Independence. Several Pirates earned strong finishes, including multiple tournament champions, highlighting our emphasis on building depth.
