Obituary: Nancy Lee Mahood

Nancy Lee Mahood, 83, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, June 3, at Ravenwood Care  Facility.  

She was born April 30, 1943 in Vinton, Iowa, to James Abernathey and Virginia  (Jurgens) Abernathey. Nancy was a graduate of Orange High School. She married Darrel  Mahood December 31, 1964 in Laporte City. Darrel preceded her in death February 6, 2003.  

Nancy attained her master’s degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa .  She was employed as an educator at Benton County Schools for 38 years, retiring in 2003.  Nancy enjoyed doing crafts and outdoor activities, such as horseback riding and  fishing. She also found her love in singing karaoke. Nancy enjoyed sewing. Most of all she  enjoyed doing family activities and spending time with her family.  

Survivors include her brother, James Abernathey of Waterloo; aunt, Carolyn Rock of  Wisconsin, and nieces, nephew, and several cousins.  

Nancy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister-in-law Geri Abernathey;  and special friend Bill Walker.  

Memorial services will be held today, June 11, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Hagarty-Waychoff Grarup, Waterloo.
