Hudson boys track builds momentum with strong week of competition
The Drake Relays accepts the top 96 4x100 relay teams across all classes statewide. Hudson’s 4x100 relay team will compete at Drake Stadium on Saturday, April 25, at 10:12 a.m.

A rare stretch of 70-plus-degree April weather set the stage for a breakout week for the  Hudson boys track and field team, which delivered two impressive performances highlighted  by personal bests, medals and a record-breaking jump.

At the East Marshall meet on April 13, Hudson turned in its best team finish of the  season, placing third with 82 points—just two points shy of runner-up honors. The night  featured 15 personal records, along with two gold medals, three silvers, four bronzes and a  historic performance in the field events.

Drake Griffin led the way with a standout showing in the long jump, soaring 22 feet, 1½ inches. The jump secured gold, set a new meet record and broke the Hudson school record  that had stood since 2008. The previous mark was held by Channing Puls, making the moment  a memorable one for the program.

Owen Bell also captured gold, winning the 200-meter dash, and added a runner-up  finish in the 400 meters—his fourth personal best in the event this season.  Hudson’s relay teams played a major role in the team’s success. The 4x800 relay team  of Colten Jensen, Casey Greiman, Alik Dodge and Payton Bishop claimed silver, fueled by a  strong anchor leg from Bishop. The 4x200 team of Hunter Coulson, Griffin, Cooper Hamer and  Liam Rhymer also took silver with a significant team PR.

In the field events, Jackson Nesteby added a bronze medal in the long jump with a  lifetime best of 20-3½. Rylan Dunbar contributed a bronze in the 110-meter high hurdles, while  the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams each added bronze finishes to cap the night.

Additional top-eight finishes came from the sprint medley relay (fourth), Hamer in the  high jump (sixth) and 200 meters (seventh), Dodge in the 1,600 meters (sixth), and Grady  Moseley in the discus (eighth).

Just three days later, Hudson hosted its home meet on April 16 and continued to build  on that momentum, placing fifth out of 17 teams with 65 points—an improvement from last  year’s seventh-place finish and 39 points at the same meet.

With a focus on quality over quantity during the fast-paced meet, Hudson tallied one  gold, two silvers and three bronzes.

Once again, Griffin and Nesteby dominated the long jump, finishing first and second,  respectively, to account for 18 team points. Bell added a runner-up finish in the 200 meters  with a near sub-23-second performance.

Hudson’s sprint medley relay team (Coulson, Nesteby, Griffin, Bell) secured bronze with  a personal-best time, while the 4x200 and 4x100 relays also earned bronze medals—both with  significant time drops.

Several near-podium performances highlighted the depth of the team. The 4x800 relay  placed fourth, Bell matched his PR in the 400 meters for fourth, and Dunbar dropped 0.35  seconds in the 110-meter hurdles to also finish fourth.

Payton Bishop delivered one of the night’s most notable improvements, cutting seven  seconds off his previous best in the 800 meters to run 2:09 and place sixth. Moseley added a  seventh-place finish in the shot put, and the 4x400 relay team shaved an impressive 12  seconds off its time to crack the top eight.

Perhaps most promising for Hudson is the future: none of the athletes contributing to  these results are seniors, and a strong incoming class is already generating excitement within  the program.

With favorable weather, growing confidence and rapidly improving times, Hudson track  appears to be hitting its stride at just the right point in the season.
