Hudson AMVET Riders Receive Governor’s Volunteer Award

The Hudson AMVETS Post 82 Riders have been recognized for their commitment to serving veterans and their community, receiving the 2026 Group Governor’s Volunteer Award for outstanding volunteer service.

The award was presented during the Governor’s Volunteer Award ceremony at Urbandale High School, where volunteer organizations and individuals from across Iowa were honored for making a difference in their communities.

Kelvin Chvojka, second vice president of the AMVETS Riders, represented the local chapter at the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

According to Chvojka, the Riders were recognized for their continued volunteer efforts, particularly their work supporting veterans at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

The ceremony brought together volunteers from a wide variety of organizations, including hospitals, food banks, Habitat for Humanity and other veterans groups.
“I was stopped several times by people thanking me — and our Riders — for what we do,” Chvojka said.

The local Riders chapter regularly volunteers its time through fundraising events, benefit rides and community activities that support veterans and their families. 
“Our Riders Chapter is all about volunteering our time for others,” Chvojka said. “None of us were forced to do it. We care about others and especially our veterans. This is what we do.”

The chapter’s annual Veterans Benefit Ride will take place Saturday, July 25. Riders will travel to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown to spend time with residents during the visit.

Community members are also invited to stop by the Hudson AMVETS Post throughout the day to participate in the silent auction, enjoy live music and support fundraising efforts benefiting veterans and their families. Those who do not wish to bid are encouraged to make a cash donation to support the Riders’ ongoing veterans programs.

Reflecting on the statewide recognition, Chvojka credited the entire chapter for its dedication to serving others.

“We have a great team here,” he said. “I am proud to be an AMVETS Rider and proud of what we do here in Iowa.”
